Privacy of Your Autism Diagnosis – FAQ

A: When you participate in an out-of-pocket assessment with Dr. Ferris at Haven Health and Wellness, your privacy is paramount. Your records are maintained within our secure, internal system and are not shared with hospitals, insurance companies, or external health networks. We do not bill insurance, so your diagnosis is not reported to any insurance databases. Only you and Dr. Ferris have access to your assessment results unless you provide written authorization to share them with a third party.

A: Under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), your health information is protected. Dr. Ferris is committed to safeguarding your privacy and would not release your records without your explicit consent unless legally compelled by a valid court order. Even in such cases, HIPAA allows healthcare providers to object to disclosures that could cause harm to the patient, and Dr. Ferris would consider releasing autism diagnoses to be a cause of potential harm. As an autistic person herself, Dr. Ferris understands that many autistic individuals do not wish to be included on any federal registry or list and is committed to protecting that privacy.

A: There has been public discussion about a potential federal autism registry. However, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has clarified that it is not creating an autism registry. Instead, HHS plans to develop a “real-world data platform” that links existing datasets to support research into the causes of autism and insights into improved treatment strategies. This platform will utilize de-identified data, meaning it cannot be traced back to specific individuals.

A: No. Since we do not bill insurance, your diagnosis is not reported to any insurance companies. Additionally, our practice operates independently and does not automatically share information with other healthcare providers. Your records remain confidential unless you provide explicit written consent to share them.

A: Absolutely. Disclosing your diagnosis is a personal decision. You have full control over who you inform—whether it’s family, friends, employers, or educational institutions. We respect your choices and will only share information with others if you provide written authorization.

A: Yes. Your health information is protected under HIPAA, which sets strict national standards for the confidentiality and security of medical records. Without your consent, your diagnosis cannot be disclosed to unauthorized individuals or entities, except under specific, legally defined circumstances.

A: We understand that concerns may arise over time. If you have any questions or need further clarification about the privacy of your diagnosis, please reach out to us directly. We’re here to support you and ensure your information remains fully confidential.
